Video Poker

Everybody loves the old-style game of five-card draw poker! Video poker is a fun way to satisfy that urge on your own!

Video poker is a comparatively fresh game. Since the 1970s, video poker has become one of the hottest casino games nowadays. Video poker combines the machine-driven play of the slot machines with a normal five-card draw poker game. The player deposits one to five coins in a machine, and then the machine deals the player five cards from a standard deck. Several versions of this game are popular in casinos. Some styles use multiple decks; some give out bonus payouts for specific hands, and some even use wild cards! The wild cards give the players a big advantage, but hands with wild cards pay out less than natural hands.

If you've never tried to play poker before now, here is a summary of the rules:

The player receives five cards from a standard deck. The object of the game is to have one of the particular poker hands listed below. In ‘draw’ poker, the player gets one opportunity to switch out the cards they don't need in exchange for totally new cards and a take a chance to create a better hand. If they don't like their cards, they can swap out as many or as few as they like.

The better hands are much harder to get, but pay much better. The worse hands are more common, but have smaller payouts. Here is a list of poker hands, from best to worst:

Royal Flush: The five highest cards (ace, king, queen, jack, ten), all of the same suit.
Straight Flush: Any five consecutive cards (e.g. 5,6,7,8,9), all of the same suit.
Four of a Kind: Four cards of the same rank (e.g. four kings).
Full House: Three cards of the same rank combined with two cards, also of the same rank (e.g. 77744).
Flush: Any five non-consecutive cards, all of the same suit.
Straight: Any five consecutive cards, regardless of suit.
Three of a Kind: Three cards of the same rank (e.g. 99952).
Two Pair: Two cards of the same rank combined with another two cards of the same rank (e.g. 66229).
Pair: Two cards of the same rank (e.g. 55427).

In the “Jacks or Better” version of the game, the lowest-paying hand is a pair of jacks. In wild card versions, the minimum paying hand is three of a kind.
